Manage device nicknames and tags

Nicknames and tags allow you to make devices more easily identifiable in your tenant. You can add or delete them on a device-by-device basis or in bulk.
Nicknames
Referred to as aliases in the original console, nicknames are customizable identifiers to help you better recognize devices. You can’t edit device names in Knox Manage, so nicknames are useful if you want to create alternative names for devices. Due to their increased readability and recognizability, nicknames can improve your ability to track and organize devices in Knox Manage.
Manage nicknames for a single device
To manage nicknames for a single device:
- Go to the Devices page and click the name of a device.
- On the device details sliding panel that opens, you can enter new nicknames for the device, separating each entry with a comma. Nicknames can be up to 100 characters. From here, you can also edit or delete current nicknames.
Manage nicknames in bulk
To manage nicknames for multiple devices at once:

Go to Devices > BULK ACTIONS.

Click the MANAGE DEVICE NICKNAMES tile. From the page that opens, you can download an XLSX template and fill in the applicable device names, IMEIs, serial numbers, and the nickname you want to add for each device. You can only add one nickname per device with this method.
Any existing nicknames you previously set for devices will be overwritten.

Once you fill the template, upload it. Then click SUBMIT.
The nicknames are added to devices.
Tags
Tags are custom identifiers that allow you to categorize your devices. For example, if you want to separate your devices by location, such as by floors in your office, you could add tags labeled first floor and second floor. The tags make it easier to locate and manage specific groups of devices from the Devices page.
Manage tags for a single device
On the Devices page, there are a couple ways you can manage tags for a single device:
- From the ACTIONS drop-down, click Manage device tags. Add new tags or remove existing ones, separating each new entry with a comma or by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. Click SUBMIT.
- Click on a device’s name. On the device details sliding panel that opens, enter new tags or remove existing ones.
Manage tags in bulk
To manage tags for multiple devices at once:
- Go to Devices > BULK ACTIONS.
- Click the MANAGE DEVICE TAGS tile. From the page that opens, you can download a XLSX template and fill in the applicable device names, IMEIs, serial numbers, and the tags that you want to add for each device. Each device can have up to ten tags. Any additional tags aren’t added.
- Once you fill the template, upload it. You can select the Overwrite existing tags checkbox if you want to overwrite any tags for these devices that you set previously.
- Then click SUBMIT.
The tags are added to devices.
