Wi-Fi doesn’t re-enable after resetting Allow to configure Wi-Fi policy from False to True

Overview

When managing devices through Knox Service Plugin, you may notice an issue where Wi-Fi functionality doesn’t automatically restore after resetting the Allow to configure Wi-Fi policy from False to True. Although the Wi-Fi toggle becomes accessible to the device users, the actual Wi-Fi connection fails to activate or briefly turns on before disabling itself, even when the policy appears to be correctly configured.

Cause

Adjusting the Allow to configure Wi-Fi policy from False to True only restores device user access to the Wi-Fi settings interface — it doesn’t automatically activate Wi-Fi functionality. Without a properly configured Wi-Fi network profile accompanying this change, the system can’t establish a stable Wi-Fi connection, causing the Wi-Fi adapter to deactivate shortly after attempting to turn on.

In addition, if both Knox Service Plugin and Android Enterprise Wi-Fi settings are configured within the same profile, this can result in policy conflicts that prevent Wi-Fi from activating properly on the device.

Resolution

To properly restore Wi-Fi functionality, ensure you’ve configured your Wi-Fi settings in your Knox Service Plugin configuration:

  1. On your EMM console, navigate to your Knox Service Plugin configuration.

  2. Under Device-wide policies, configure the following policies:

    Policy Value
    Enable device policy controls True
Device Controls > Wi-Fi Policy > Enable Wi-Fi policy controls True
Device Controls > Wi-Fi Policy > Allow to configure Wi-Fi (Configure details below) True
  3. Under Wi-Fi Configurations, configure the following:

    Policy Value
Wi-Fi Network Name Enter your SSID
Security Type Select the appropriate type (for example, WPA2)
Password Enter the password (if applicable)
Wi-Fi Enterprise Configuration Configure if connecting to an Enterprise network
  4. Save the profile and apply the changes to your devices.

As the Knox Service Plugin Wi-Fi policy functions identically to Android Enterprise Wi-Fi policies, it’s important to avoid duplicating these configurations within the same profile to prevent policy conflicts.

If your device has already lost network connectivity and can’t receive policy updates through normal channels, you may need to factory reset the device.
