Overview

With Knox Service Plugin, you can configure how OS updates are applied to your fleet of devices. Some prerequisites must be met before updates can begin on a device.

Prerequisites for OS version updates

For Android 12 and higher, the following prerequisites must be met for the OS version update to install on the device:

  • Device battery must be over 20%.
  • No ongoing calls during the duration of the installation.
  • No actively running apps. The device must be in idle mode.
  • Flashlight, audio, file sharing, power sharing, Smart switch, DeX must not be running.

The device checks for these conditions every 30 minutes. If any of the conditions aren’t met, the installation is postponed. If all the conditions are met, the installation commences on the device.

Timeframe of OS version updates

The availability of OS version updates is dependent on the following factors:

  • Region and carrier — updates are rolled out gradually, not all at once.
  • OS update policies configured on the device. The following table details device behavior for updates depending on the policy:
Update process System update policy Result
Downloading the update Automatic/maintenance window Enforce firmware auto update on Wi-Fi set to True The firmware update is downloaded automatically when Wi-Fi is connected.
Enforce firmware auto update on Wi-Fi set to False A prompt or notification displays, requiring confirmation from the device user before downloading the firmware update.
Postpone Postpones download of system updates for 30 days. After 30 days, the update is downloaded automatically when Wi-Fi is connected.
Installing the update Automatic If the OS version update prerequisites are met, then the installation occurs automatically.
Maintenance window OS version prerequisites are checked and installation occurs during the window.
Postpone Postpones the installation of system updates for 30 days.

If a device has the policy Enforce firmware auto update on Wi-Fi set to False and an update is pending confirmation, pushing an updated profile with Enforce firmware auto update on Wi-Fi set to True doesn’t download the update automatically. A device restart is required before the update can be downloaded.
