Complete device enrollment
Last updated August 5th, 2025
To complete the device enrollment process, the device user needs to simply turn on the device and follow a series of on-screen instructions.
Depending on the size of your device fleet and whether or not you purchased the devices from a reseller, you can use the following enrollment methods:
- Out-of-box experience (OOBE) — Ideal for large device fleets. Suitable for enrolling reseller-uploaded devices.
- QR code — Best suited for small device fleets. Suitable for both reseller-uploaded and non-reseller uploaded devices.
- Knox Deployment App — Best suited for small device fleets as you can only enroll one device at a time. Suitable for non-reseller uploaded devices.
The Knox Deployment App (KDA) is scheduled for deprecation in the upcoming release. Following this change, you will no longer be able to use KDA with Knox Mobile Enrollment to enroll devices in your EMM solution.
You can use the out-of-box experience (OOBE) or QR code method instead.
This page provides an overview of each method along with instructions for device users to complete enrollment.
Out-of-box experience (OOBE)
The out-of-box experience (OOBE) allows you to enroll your devices into your Knox cloud services directly after unboxing or factory-resetting the device.
If you select EMM in your enrollment profile, all that the device user needs to do is simply turn on the device, follow a series of enrollment screens, and sign in with their EMM credentials.
If you select Knox E-FOTA or Knox Asset Intelligence when creating your enrollment profile, the respective app automatically installs on the device during OOBE enrollment.
You can enroll devices running Android 14 or higher through the OOBE flow on Wi-Fi networks behind captive portals.
Before you can begin using OOBE, you’ll need:
- Devices uploaded by a reseller.
- An enrollment profile assigned to the device.
OOBE for device users
To enroll in an EMM using OOBE enrollment, the device user must:
- Turn on the device and connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- Follow the series of enrollment screens.
- Enter their EMM account credentials and tap Confirm.
Once the device user credentials are validated, the device is successfully enrolled in the EMM.
QR code
Knox Mobile Enrollment allows you to enroll both reseller-uploaded and non-reseller uploaded devices running Android 10 or higher into an EMM using a QR code. When you create an enrollment profile, a unique QR code is generated. You can either print it or download it to share with device users. Before you can begin using QR code-based enrollment, you’ll need to create an enrollment profile with a QR code.
QR code-based device enrollment is supported for EMMs only. If you attempt to use a QR code to enroll a device into an EMM and a Knox cloud service, such as Knox E-FOTA or Knox Asset Intelligence, the device is enrolled into the EMM only. To enroll in Knox cloud services, use OOBE enrollment instead.
Additionally, QR code enrollment is not supported for devices associated with the platform Android - Others in the Devices Secured by Knox table.
QR code enrollment for device users
To enroll devices using a QR code, the device user must:
- Turn on the device.
- Draw a plus sign on the device screen (+). This action activates the device’s camera in QR code recognition mode.
- On the Knox Deployment screen, tap QR code to open the QR code reader app.
- Scan the QR code.
- If the QR code contains Wi-Fi credentials, a Wi-Fi connection is automatically established. Otherwise, enter Wi-Fi credentials.
- Follow the series of enrollment screens.
- When prompted, they must enter their EMM account credentials, then tap Finish to complete enrollment.
Knox Deployment App
The Knox Deployment App lets you to add devices not purchased from a reseller to the Knox Mobile Enrollment console through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi direct.
Once your devices are in the console, you can assign them a profile to complete enrollment.
Before you can begin using the Knox Deployment App, you’ll need to create an enrollment profile in the Knox Mobile Enrollment console.
See Use the Knox Deployment App for a step-by-step guide to using this enrollment method.
