Knox E-FOTA 21.11 release notes
Last updated July 26th, 2023
Starting with this release, Knox product versioning will be named based on dates, specifically the year followed by the month. For example, this November 17, 2021 release — what would have been Knox cloud service 1.41 — uses 21.11 as the version name.
End of support for Internet Explorer 11
Microsoft announced that they will end support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on June 15, 2022. In preparation for this, as of 21.11 (November 18, 2021), solutions on the Knox cloud service are no longer supported on Internet Explorer. The Knox cloud service is best accessed on Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox.
Gradual campaign rollout
This release allows you to randomly and gradually rollout campaigns to devices. You can rollout the campaign at a certain rate to a random set of devices daily. For example, 5% of the devices can start a firmware download on the first day, the next 5% on the day after, and so on. This feature helps with troubleshooting and discovering critical issues with firmware rollout and prevents the spread of bad firmware to all company devices, helping to maintain business continuity. The option to set a gradual campaign rollout is in campaign creation.
Network throttling per Wi-Fi SSID
With this release, you can now specify maximum download speeds for specific networks identified by SSID in your campaigns. This means you can throttle download speeds for up to five specific SSIDs and you can check which network is being used to download firmware to the devices assigned to the campaign. You can also see how many devices are using a specific SSID to download firmware on the dashboard.
Detailed firmware information on device
This release adds detailed firmware information in the firmware install ready pop-up notice. This gives more information such as improvements, firmware file size and security patch level about new firmware updates to the end user.
Daily email reports for campaign updates
With this release, you can subscribe to daily email updates reporting the number of updated devices and failures. These reports can help you better track devices that may need special attention with firmware updates. You can also see error details if the number of failed devices exceeds 20% of the total number of devices.
Automatic re-assignment of license and campaign to EMM groups
This release introduces automatic re-assignment of a license and campaign to devices in an EMM group which were not assigned. This feature prevents situations where devices in an EMM group are left unassigned because the default license did not have enough seats to hold all the devices in an EMM group. This process is done automatically after an EMM sync, and you can also trigger this process by re-assigning a license and campaign to EMM groups.
USB Ethernet support
With this release, devices can download firmware over a USB Ethernet connection. This feature allows you to download firmware on a large number of devices at high speeds without slowing down wireless networks. Ethernet connectivity is supported as long as the campaign allows Wi-Fi downloads. You can set this when creating or editing a campaign.
Changes to client app deletion
With this release, the Knox E-FOTA client app is no longer deleted from a device when it is unenrolled or deleted from Knox E-FOTA. You can uninstall the client app through your EMM, and an end user can still manually uninstall the client app after their device is unenrolled or deleted from Knox E-FOTA. This change removes the hassle of re-installing and launching the client app when re-registering the unenrolled devices.
Changes to EMM group syncing
This release limits the number of groups that can be added from an EMM instance to 1000. This change is to reduce server load and prevent loss of services.
Improvements to campaign syncing
In this release, the campaign information is synced only if the target firmware version of the device assigned to the campaign has changed. Syncing only when necessary reduces usage of resources and network loads.
