Devices with a legacy Knox Workspace container stuck in Android Recovery Mode after the OS 11 update

Environment

  • Galaxy S10 series (SM-G970/3/5/7)
  • A50s/A60 for the China market
  • Legacy Knox Workspace container

Overview

Devices still configured with a legacy Knox Workspace container may be stuck at the Android Recovery Mode screen after the most recent OS 11 software update. Currently, the only recovery method is to perform a factory reset.

Device Models Affected:

  • Galaxy S10 series (SM-G970/3/5/7)
  • A50s/A60 for the China market

Software updates containing the issue:

  • S10 Open (Opened on Mar. 31 - Apr. 22 depending on buyer code)
  • S10 VZW (Opened on April 16)
  • S10 ATT (Opened on April 13)
  • S10 CCT (Comcast, Opened on April 14)
  • S10 CHA (Charter, Opened on April 14)
  • S10 USC (Unbranded, Opened on April 24) * S10 TMO and SPR are NOT affected (delayed MR schedule)
  • A50s China & Hong Kong (Opened on April 19)
  • A60 China (Opened on April 15)
  • A60 Hong Kong & Taiwan (Opened on April 21)

Resolution

Samsung Action: A fix will be released in the May 2021 software update.

Customer Action Required: Use your UEM solution to disallow OTA updates. This will temporarily stop unaffected devices from receiving the update until the May 2021 software update is available.

Additional information

Note that the legacy Knox Workspace has been replaced by several corporate-owned device management options.
