How to perform FOTA upgrade when Power Off is disabled

Environment

  • Knox Manage (KM)
  • Android Enterprise (AE)
  • Fully Managed (Device owner) mode

Overview

You may need to disable the Power Off function for corporate devices to ensure that users cannot go “off the radar”. However, this powerful policy restricts other functionalities of devices like Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) upgrades.

Cause

If the Power Off policy is set to Disallow, it prevents users from performing any operation that needs the device to be powered off or rebooted. When the user initiates a software update, the device is able to download firmware updates but cannot proceed with installation.

How do I perform FOTA upgrades on a device?

You can temporarily allow the Power Off function by modifying the KM profile and applying it to the device. After the firmware upgrade is complete, the policy value can be reverted.
