Install an app through an EMM

This section provides general instructions on how to use Knox Manage or VMware to install an internal app, like the Knox E-FOTA client app.

Before you start, download the Knox E-FOTA client APK and save it to your local machine.

Obtain the Knox E-FOTA client APK

This procedure describes how to download the Knox E-FOTA client APK, which you will need in the succeeding procedures.

  1. Go to Devices > All Devices.

  2. Click Get App Now.
  3. In the Get app now popup, click the download link for the APK file.

    The APK file is downloaded to your local machine.

Install an app through Knox Manage (Legacy)

Add an internal application

To add internal applications, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to the Knox Manage admin portal.
  2. Navigate to Application.
  3. On the “Application” page, click Add.
  4. In the “Select Application Type” window, select Internal and click OK.
  5. On the “Add Application” page, enter the following information:

    • Platform: Select the mobile OS.
    • Application File: Click and select the Knox E-FOTA One client APK file.
    • Name: Enter the application name.
    • Version: The retrieved application version is displayed. If there is no value, “-“ is displayed.
    • Package Name (Android): The retrieved package name is displayed. If there is no value, “-“ is displayed.
    • Platform & Source: The application’s platform and source are displayed.
    • Type: The application type is displayed as “Internal.”
    • Category: Select the application category. If you click Manage Category, you can add or modify application categories.
    • App Wrapper (Android): Reconfigure and save the application so that security policies, such as text copy and screen capture, can be controlled in the Admin Portal.
    • Unassign Option: Check if you want to uninstall the app from the device upon unassignment.
    • Description: Enter a description for the application.
    • Icon: Select the application icon image.
    • Screenshot: Select screenshots of the application to provide a preview for Android device users.

5. Do one of the following:

  • Click Save & Assign to save the information and proceed to assign the application.
  • Click Save to save the information and return to the application list.

Assign an internal application

To assign added internal applications, complete the following steps:

  1. Navigate to Application.
  2. On the “Application” page, click the checkbox for the applications to be assigned.
  3. Click Assign.
  4. On the “Assign Application” page, configure the assignment settings.
    • Target Device: For Android internal applications, select the target device type.
    • Install Area (Android): Select the area where the application will be installed.
      • Android Enterprise: The designated installation area based on the device type is displayed.
      • Android Legacy: For Android Legacy with Knox Workspace devices, select the areas to install the application.
    • Install Type: Select the installation type.
      • Manual: Allow users to install the application manually.
      • Automatic (Removable): Set the application to be installed automatically. Users are allowed to remove the application.
      • Automatic (Non-removable): Set the application to be installed automatically. Users are not allowed to remove the application.

      NOTE—The installation type may be designated depending on the target device type.

    • Text copy: Allow users to copy text in the application.
    • Screen capture (Android): Allow users to capture screens in the application.
    • Auto-run after Install (Android): Set to start the application immediately after installation.
    • Home Screen Shortcut (Samsung Galaxy device only): Add a shortcut for the application on the Home screen of the device.

      NOTE—Once users delete the shortcut, it will not be added again.

  5. Select the target type.
  6. Search for the target groups/organizations and click the checkbox for the groups/organizations to assign.
  7. Click Assign.
  8. In the “Assign Application” window, view the assignment information and click OK.
